JUNE 2005 RWDMAG FEATURE ON MANCHESTER GARAGE, GRIME & RADIO | PRESS ARCHIVE

A video posted by Tom Clarke (@visuals0und) on

Did an event at work today with JD Sports and RWDMAG, reminded me of a day in 2005 when RWD came up to Manchester to feature the emerging grime / garage scene centered around UNITY RADIO. We took them to (pre-refurb) The Castle to play pool, then to parks, studios & roof tops....

DIGGING THROUGH 586 RECORDS | CENTRAL NEWCASTLE ON TYNE

Passed through the ace 586 Records the other day, located on the third floor of B&D Studios in central Newcastle, opposite Tyneside Cinema (been going to their Art Deco cafe since like, 1989). Definitely worth a visit.

586's selection is amazing, literally 100s & 100s of curated house, disco, latin & 'the B word' vinyl (plus now a load of classic rock LPs - Tony had just sold an original copy of the first Stooges album that day). A great addition to the record shop scene in Newcastle & the North East. Exactly what Tripadvisor is saying too.

For a proper post on 586 head to Aiden D'Araujo's consistently excellent 'House Hunting' blog. If you can't get to The Toon then check out the 586 Discogs listings, some belters up on there.

Also found this documentary on 586 Records, worth a watch...

A DAY AT ALMASTY BREWING CO | SHIREMOOR NEWCASTLE

The Almasty or Alma (Mongolian: Алмас/Almas, Bulgarian: Алмас, Chechen: Алмазы, Turkish: Albıs), Mongolian for "wild man", is a purported hominid cryptozoological species reputed to inhabit the Caucasus and Pamir Mountains of central Asia, and the Altai Mountains of southern Mongolia.[1] The creature is not currently recognised or cataloged by science. [ more here ]

So now you know.

Almasty is also an amazing craft ale brewery located in Shiremoor, Newcastle. It started last year & due to the super brewing skills of Mark, the ace graphic design (shouts to Linaker) and support from the well established booze mecca of The Free Trade Inn, it's the best thing to happen to ale in Newcastle since Brown Bottle.

Almasty held an open day last Saturday, a few photos below:

TROPICAL IPA,
A PAIR OF ALMASTY GROWLERS

THE CUSTOM GLASS IS CLASS, OBVS
The open day itself was very chilled - a good selection of Almasty's current range (see below) plus wood fired pizzas, decent music, no mooks & pretty unbelievably for Shiremoor, actual North East sunshine. Perfect.

A PROPER MENU

BREWERY
SUNSHINE
MURO BURO
As well as the booze & food, Paul aka Muro Buro was showing his print work, Super good. Head to his website to browse & buy.

So in brief, Almasty is ace. If you see if anywhere, check it out. It'll hopefully by available in places like Manchester, Sheffield, Liverpool very soon. In the meantime, head to the Fair Trade.

Also, props to Mark for sorting out a celebrity guest on Saturday - Larry David!
Pretty, pretty good....
