SHETLAND ISLANDS PHOTOGRAPHY | RAF SAXA VORD, UNST | JUNE 2014

Yes this does look like a Minecraft character
There used to be a RAF base on the northerly Shetland Island of Unst - RAF Saxa Vord.  Operational from 1957, it's radar provided long-range coverage of the airspace to the North of Scotland. The station's motto "Praemoneo de Periculis", Forewarn of Danger, reflected its role.  For a comprehensive history of the base check out this blog, featuring interviews and photos from those who served there.

(also, the above image was used in McrCoderDojo's mailout - click here)

The base closed in 2006 but the site continues, in part as a hostel & restaurant but also as home to the appropriately named Valhalla Brewery. Very much recommended, are both.

Various photos taken around Saxa Vord Resort and the surrounding area below...

Also, Unst is home to this brilliant bear/dog combo (possibly owned by Michael Eavis?!) As it was a hot day, he'd just been for  a swim....
