There used to be a RAF base on the northerly Shetland Island of Unst - RAF Saxa Vord. Operational from 1957, it's radar provided long-range coverage of the airspace to the North of Scotland. The station's motto "Praemoneo de Periculis", Forewarn of Danger, reflected its role. The base closed in 2006 but the site continues, in part as a hostel & restaurant but also as home to the appropriately named Valhalla Brewery. Very much recommended, are both.
Also, Unst is home to this brilliant bear/dog combo (possibly owned by Michael Eavis?!) As it was a hot day, he'd just been for a swim....
